DoCoMo Announces Test Of C-V2X Ericsson Qualcomm Support This Year

- Jan 17, 2018 -

Japan's NTT DoCoMo has partnered with China, Nissan, INC, OKI, Ericsson and Qualcomm to plan the first cellular network connection (C-V2X) test in Japan this year.

The purpose of this collaboration is to validate and demonstrate the benefits of using the C-V2X of the 3GPP R14 specification.

The tests were designed to demonstrate the range, reliability and latency benefits of C-V2X direct communications using the 5GHz band and the complementary benefits of combining LTE-Advanced network communications.

The C-V2X is designed to complement advanced driver assistance system sensors, such as radar, lidar, and camera systems to extend the vehicle's situational awareness beyond sight, or even hard-to-read intersections.

Direct communication technology provides enhanced range and reliability without relying on cellular network assistance or coverage.

Test cases will include vehicle-to-vehicle, vehicle-to-infrastructure, vehicle-to-pedestrian direct communication, and vehicle-to-network operations over wide area cellular and cellular based access.

DoCoMo will provide its LTE-A network and V2N applications, and Qualcomm will be offering its C-V2X reference design, including the C-V2X chipset with integrated Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) capabilities, and OKI will integrate the chipset into its road Edge unit infrastructure and applications.

"This partnership will bring together the valuable knowledge and experience of world leaders in the automotive and telecommunications industries and the need to consolidate their role in the automotive networking era." Hiroshi Nakamura, chief technology officer of NTT DoCoMo, said that "NTT DoCoMo has decided that, Our experience in telecommunications systems is integral to maximizing the value of C-V2X and will provide a clear path to future C-V2X for cars and road connections.
