Submarine Fiber Cable System

The government of St. Helena and SAEx International have signed a memorandum of understanding on the deployment of SAEx, a South Atlantic submarine cable system connecting South Africa, the United States and Brazil.


Saint Helena, a volcanic island in the South Atlantic, is part of the United Kingdom, 1950 km from the West Bank of Africa and 3400 km from the east coast of South America. The famous Napoleon is here exile until death.

SAEx International is responsible for the construction and operation of this international submarine cable system spanning the South Atlantic, with a total length of over 13,000 km.

Under the memorandum of understanding, the submarine system will build a feeder to connect the island of St. Helena to an initial rate of 200Gbps.

Rosalind Thomas, chief executive of SAEx, said the connection to the undersea cable network in St. Helena will be provided by the European Union with a total investment of about 21.5 million euros.

It is reported that the St. Helena Internet connection depends entirely on the high satellite system, the rate is only 20Mbps.

Under the plan, SAEx submarine cable system to be completed and put into operation in the first half of 2020.
